2022 Toyota GR86 Wheel and Tire Setup

This 2022 Toyota GR86 runs a square set of 18×8.5 Motegi MR161 KOJIN wheels in matte black with a +35mm offset, paired with 235/40R18 Nitto tires at all four corners. The wider wheel and tire package gives the lightweight rear wheel drive coupe a fuller, more planted stance while retaining the factory suspension and stock ride height.

The 18×8.5 sizing adds an inch of wheel width compared with the factory 18 inch setup, while the lower +35mm offset moves the wheel considerably closer to the fender line. The result is a clean factory-plus fitment that fills the arches much better without relying on a suspension drop.

Factory vs New Specs

A 2022 Toyota GR86 equipped with the factory 18 inch package uses approximately 18×7.5 wheels with a +48mm offset and 215/40R18 tires. This build moves to a square 18×8.5 +35 setup with wider 235/40R18 tires.

Wheel Width: The Motegi wheel increases from 7.5 inches to 8.5 inches, adding a full inch of width at each corner.

Tire Width: Tire width increases from 215mm to 235mm, adding 20mm of nominal section width and giving the car a broader contact patch.

Factory Tire Height: A 215/40R18 measures approximately 24.8 inches tall.

New Tire Height: A 235/40R18 measures approximately 25.4 inches tall. That is roughly 0.6 inch taller overall, or about a 2.5 percent increase in diameter.

Ground Clearance: The larger tire adds approximately 0.3 inch of static ground clearance from tire radius alone. Since this car remains on the factory suspension, that small increase is retained.

Speedometer: Because the new tire is approximately 2.5 percent larger in diameter, actual road speed will be slightly higher than indicated compared with the factory tire size.

Offset and Wheel Position

The factory wheel sits around +48mm while the Motegi MR161 KOJIN uses a +35mm offset. That 13mm reduction in offset combines with the additional inch of wheel width to make a noticeable difference in how the wheel sits underneath the GR86.

Outward Position: The new wheel sits approximately 26mm, or about 1 inch, farther toward the fender per side than the factory 18×7.5 +48 wheel.

Inner Clearance: Despite gaining a full inch of overall wheel width, the lower offset keeps the inner wheel position almost identical to stock. The change at the suspension side is only a fraction of a millimeter, so nearly all of the additional width is effectively gained toward the outside.

This is why the 18×8.5 +35 combination fills the GR86 fenders so much more effectively without dramatically pushing the inner barrel toward the suspension.

Fitment and Stance

The square setup gives the GR86 an even footprint front to rear and brings all four wheels considerably closer to the fender line. The 235 width tires also sit more naturally on the wider 8.5 inch wheels than the narrower factory rubber would.

At stock ride height, the additional wheel width and lower offset create a noticeably fuller stance without changing the factory suspension geometry. The slightly taller tire also fills a little more of the vertical wheel opening.

The combination works particularly well for an owner who wants a more aggressive wheel position without immediately committing to lowering springs or coilovers.

Ride and Drivability

The wider 235 tire increases the available contact patch compared with the factory 215 width tire and can give the GR86 a more planted feel through faster corners. Keeping the same size on all four corners also maintains a balanced square configuration.

The approximately 2.5 percent increase in tire diameter is small but should still be considered when comparing the setup with factory sizing. Effective gearing becomes slightly taller and speedometer readings can differ slightly from the original calibration.

Because the suspension remains at stock height, factory suspension travel and everyday ground clearance are preserved while the wider wheels and tires provide most of the visual change.
